Our client wanted to transform this kitchen into the modern-retro space that would accommodate her needs for 21st century living, and bring a sense of nostalgia into the home. The style of kitchen that we gave her resembled a 60’s design, with a compartmentalized kitchen area with a small dining room off to the side. Her beautiful home in Bethesda had a cramped kitchen layout, accentuated by the choppy floor plan. We knocked a few of the interior walls to open up the floor plan and give us more space to work with.
A small square island and a large two-tiered peninsula were topped with dark marbled granite, and made the dark colors in the backsplash stand out. The dark granite countertops were contrasted by the light colored wood cabinetry, and medium-light wood flooring. After knocking down walls and rearranging the existing layout of the kitchen there was more room cabinetry and counter space, making this kitchen the ultimate baker’s fantasy.
The two tiered peninsula was situated off to the side where the new dinging room was now situated. The additional layer of counter space made the perfect place for displaying snacks and drinks while entertaining. Both the dining room and living space were conveniently located next to the kitchen, coupled with the open floor plan design, meant the homeowners can prepare food and be gracious hosts. The square island also included space for seating so there was never a shortage of eating space in this kitchen. The microwave was placed in a small cubby directly next to the fridge, perfect to warming up late night snacks to be enjoyed at the small island.
Throughout the space the homeowner requested larger glass windows, three of which were included in her dining room design. The addition of the larger windows meant that more light would be coming through and the space would become brighter. The natural light would play well off the light colored cabinets and floor and create a striking contrast against the dark colored countertops. She also included a baker’s rack in the living space, off the kitchen. This is perfect for additional storage or for displaying keepsakes and mementos.
The homeowner was so excited about the retro-modern look of her kitchen, and it made her feel right at home. She wrote, “My new kitchen is a dream come true and everything I hoped for. Not a day goes by that I don’t step back and say ‘WOW!’ I love it so much. If I had to move I’d bring my kitchen with me.”
The homeowner loved her kitchen so much she even called us back to come and renovate her hallway bathroom for her.
