6 Must-Have Features for Aging in Place Home Renovations

Aging in place projects are design modifications or home remodeling changes that allow for people to live comfortably, independently and safely in their homes as they age. This is a wonderful alternative to moving into an assisted living facility or moving into an unfamiliar home. Alterations can be made to the existing footprint of a home or an addition can add safe space on the main level. Aging in place projects have an emphasis on improving convenience, accessibility, mobility and safety while still preserving a home’s aesthetic. Here are 6 features to consider when designing an aging in place space:

Handles

Handles are much easier to pull open than knobs. This is true for both kitchen cabinetry and doors. It can be difficult for someone with arthritis or limited strength to maneuver knobs as they require grip strength. This is a fairly easy swap for an existing home and definitely a feature to keep in mind for new additions.

Zero-Threshold Showers

This is one of the most common features that we incorporate into in-law suites or aging in place projects. High thresholds are a major tripping hazard that are not necessary to keep in a bathroom. By eliminating the threshold completely, it makes the bathroom to shower transition safer but if the shower is big enough, it can also be utilized by someone in a wheelchair. We take thresholds out of showers whenever possible as it also gives a cleaner design look.

Grab Bars

Grab bars provide stable, weight-bearing support where falls are most common. Bathrooms have slippery, wet surfaces that increase the risk of falling tremendously. Unlike towel bars, grab bars are anchored securely into wall studs to support human weight. Installing grab bars inside of showers and next to the commode makes the user feel much more comfortable inside of the bathroom.

Consistent Flooring

When there are multiple flooring types used in a space, the transition strips can become another tripping hazard. If the same type of flooring is used, the elevation changes are eliminated and transition strips are no longer necessary. Carpet is also difficult for walkers or wheelchairs to glide on. Using a consistent flooring type throughout the home looks much cleaner and makes a space appear larger.

Spacious Hallways

A narrow hallway and a wheelchair are usually not feasible. It not only feels tight but it is hard to move around. A standard residential hallway is typically around 36” wide. While this is comfortable for most people, it is recommended to make the hallways larger for aging in place projects when space permits.

Ramps

Ramps make it much easier for individuals using scooters, canes, wheelchairs and walkers to enter and exit the home without assistance. Ramps can be installed as needed or proactively for a long-term aging in place strategy. The ramp is also a valuable modification for visitors to feel safer and more independent as they come in and out of the home.

Aging in place projects are popular because many older adults prefer to stay in familiar surroundings that are close to family, friends, hobbies, and healthcare providers. In addition, it can be much more cost effective to provide an upfront investment into a current home instead of putting those funds into a long-term care facility. Falls are also one of the leading injuries for aging adults and making modifications ahead of time will dramatically decrease that risk. Accessible homes will appeal to a wider range of buyers and therefore help the resale value when it comes time to sell. First floor suites are also a major selling point for the primary owners.
